Praying In Nature
Prayer Exercises
The Adult Forum did an exercise on praying in nature out at the park. These are the ways that we thought about God and what we talked to God and each other about. The "pick 2 trees" exercise is adapted from Fr. Chester Michael. We hope this helps you find new ways to deepen your relationship with our Creator!
- Take a walk and find a symbol of God’s amazing love in creation. Spend some time examining it, studying it. What does this teach you about God? What does this teach you about yourself? Offer thanks to God for this gift.
- Pick 2 trees. One will be your God tree and one will represent yourself. Has to be a tree. Use all of your senses in examining those trees: sight, smell, taste (?), feel, sound. What do you learn from studying and comparing the 2 trees? Talk to God about this.
- Take a walk and find something in nature that is an example to you of God’s sense of humor. Why do you think it is funny? Talk to God about why God created this and what you think about it.
- Sit somewhere comfortable and close your eyes. What do you hear? Listen for awhile and breathe with the sounds. Where is God in what you hear? What is God trying to say to you in what you hear? Talk to God about this. (You can also use smell in this exercise if you choose).
